Choosing a table lamp for a console, side table or reading corner

A table lamp adds light close to where you sit or work, and its shape becomes part of the room even when it is switched off. Choosing one is easier when you start with the space and the job you want it to do.

Check the whole lamp, including the shade

Measure the surface where the lamp will stand. The shade may be wider than the base, so allow clearance from walls, shelves and nearby objects. Check the overall height rather than the base height alone.

Match the scale to the furniture

The Cloche Clear Glass & Antique Brass Table Lamp measures W 40 × D 40 × H 60 cm. Its clear glass and antique brass finish make it an option for a console or side table with enough room for the 40 cm shade.

Choose the bulb using the product specification

The Cloche’s specification calls for one 10–12W LED E27/ES GLS bulb. Follow the product’s stated fitting and wattage requirements, and check the listing for what is included. The bulb’s colour temperature also affects the room: warm light gives a different result from cooler light.

Think about what you need to illuminate

For reading, position the lamp so the light reaches the page without shining directly into your eyes. On a hallway console, make sure the lamp leaves space for everyday items. Check that there is a suitable socket nearby before committing to a position.

Bring the finish into the room

Repeat a lamp’s metal finish in one or two other details, or use its shade colour alongside existing textiles. You do not need every piece to match; a repeated detail can make the arrangement feel considered.
