]]>Choosing the right type of sofa material or fabric is important for both the comfort and style of your home. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you.
However, by understanding the different types of materials and fabrics available, you can make an informed decision that will enhance the look and feel of your living space.
In this blog, we'll explore 5 specialist sofa material types and fabrics that are popular with our customers and clients - and just what makes them such a great choice.
When it comes to furniture pieces that exude both timelessness and durability, leather sofas stand out as an excellent choice. As you'll see from our Instagram feed, iconic pieces have been adorning living rooms for generations, seamlessly blending elegance with endurance. A leather sofa not only adds a touch of sophistication to any interior but also promises a lasting style seemingly never falls out of fashion.
One of the most remarkable qualities of leather sofas is their inherent durability. Genuine leather is a natural material that develops character over time, making it more attractive as it ages.
The robust nature of leather allows it to resist tears and punctures, making it an ideal option for households with active lifestyles or even pets. Moreover, proper maintenance ensures that leather sofas can remain a part of your living space for years to come.
Whether it's a classic Chesterfield or a sleek modern design, a leather sofa from our Yorkshire-based collection embodies not only the heritage of quality craftsmanship but also the promise of a steadfast companion on your design journey.
Few materials in interior design embody luxury and comfort with a hint of lavishness like velvet. A velvet sofa is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a statement of refined taste and elegance.
The beauty of velvet lies not only in its opulent appearance but also in its irresistibly soft texture that invites you to sink in and unwind after a long day out exploring the Yorkshire countryside.
Whether you opt for a rich jewel-toned velvet or a subtle pastel hue, these sofas have a transformative ability to shift the mood of a room, from dull to sophisticated.
Despite its regal appearance, velvet is surprisingly versatile and can adapt to various design styles. From the grandeur of traditional settings to the chic minimalism of contemporary spaces, velvet sofas have a chameleon-like quality that seamlessly integrates into diverse interiors.
Linen sofas sit perfectly between comfort and sustainability. Crafted from the fibres of the flax plant, linen is a natural material that boasts a unique blend of qualities.
Linen sofas not only embody a rustic charm but also bring forth a refreshing breath of natural living into your space. They're an absolute winner in 2023 as Earth Tones and Modern Farmhouse are increasingly popular styles. Read more about 2023's design trends here.
Another real appeal of linen lies in its remarkable breathability. As a fabric, linen's porous nature allows air to flow through which has a knack for regulating temperature, making it an ideal choice for both warm summers and cooler months. That means you can enjoy those rare Yorkshire heatwave days as well as those cold evenings cosying up by the fire!
The slightly textured surface and relaxed elegance of linen upholstery brings a touch of effortless style and sophistication to any room. So whether you're aiming for a laid-back coastal vibe or a refined cottage aesthetic, linen sofas from our curated selection of fabrics can instantly become a firm favourite in your home.
When your interior goal is to create a space that exudes warmth, wool sofas emerge as a customer favourite. The natural fibres of wool have long been celebrated for their unmatched ability to provide a sense of cosiness that never falls out of fashion.
Wool is a material that speaks to both touch and visual senses. Its softness, often enhanced by intricate weaves and textures, invites you to snuggle up and unwind. Bliss!
Beyond the comfort it provides, wool has an exceptional insulating property that ensures your seating experience remains snug even during the chilliest of these Yorkshire evenings.
Choosing a wool sofa isn't solely about comfort; it's a design statement that brings a touch of rustic elegance into your living space. From classic patterns to contemporary minimalist designs, wool sofas effortlessly adapt to various styles, lending an air of timeless appeal.
Another breathable fabric, cotton is a natural material bringing with it a sense of ease and adaptability that suits a wide range of design styles.
Cotton's reputation for softness precedes it, and for good reason. The supple touch of cotton upholstery against your skin is an instant reminder of the soothing embrace it offers. Whether you're lounging with a book or hosting friends, a cotton sofa provides a gentle backdrop that invites you to unwind.
The real beauty of cotton lies in its versatility. From casual style to understated elegance, cotton sofas adapt seamlessly to different design aesthetics.

Have you ever found yourself in the midst of a renovation, or just looking to spruce up your home decor, and stumbled upon the age-old dilemma of counter vs bar height stools? Fear not, because we're here to break it down for you. With over 20 years of interior design experience, I've seen it all when it comes to seating dilemmas and I'm here to share some of my top tips.
When it comes to selecting dining stools, one of the most critical decisions you'll need to make is the height. Counter height stools typically range from 90cm, while bar height stools are typically above 1 metre. So, how do you know which height is best for your space?
You might like: Bar and Counter Stools
If you have a kitchen island or a smaller dining space, counter height stools may be the way to go. These stools are ideal for family dining as they provide a comfortable seating option while still allowing for plenty of legroom. Plus, with our reupholstery services, you can easily update your existing stools to match your new design aesthetic.
If you have a home bar or a taller dining table, bar height stools may be the perfect option for you. These stools provide a sleek and stylish look while still being practical for entertaining guests. Whether you're enjoying a casual drink with friends or hosting a formal dinner party, bar height stools offer a comfortable seating option that is sure to impress.
Counter height dining stools typically have a seat height of 70cm, making them a great choice for kitchen counters and islands that are around 90cm tall. These stools are also ideal for family-friendly spaces, as they are easier for children and elderly people to climb onto. It often means all the dining and food prep is done at the same level which can be great for entertainment or buffet-style service.
On the other hand, bar height dining stools have a seat height of 75-85cm, making them perfect for bar counters that are often just over a metre tall. These stools are better suited for adults and are ideal for entertaining spaces, such as home bars and game rooms.
Top tip: don't forget about elbow room when it comes to spacing out your seats. We recommend spacing out stools by around 15cm in between. And for wider stools, try 20-25cm.
Here at Grandad's Shed, we offer reupholstery services that can breathe new life into your beloved furniture pieces. So if you've already got the perfect bar or counter stool for your space, why not give it a refresh with our wide range of stylish and durable fabrics?

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the impact that human activity has on the environment. As a result, many people have started to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint and make more eco-friendly choices. One area where individuals can have a significant impact is in the design of their homes. By adopting sustainable interior design practices, homeowners can help to reduce waste, conserve energy, and protect the planet.
I believe that we all have a responsibility to create beautiful spaces while also being mindful of our impact on the environment. So in this blog, I'm sharing my top tips and tricks for designing eco-friendly interiors that are not only stylish but also sustainable. Whether you're a homeowner, renter, or just someone who loves design, I hope you'll join me on this journey towards a more sustainable future.
Sustainable Materials
When it comes to interior design for sustainability, choosing the right materials is crucial. Sustainable materials are those that are renewable, non-toxic, and have a low environmental impact, helping to reduce your carbon footprint and create a healthier living space.
One popular sustainable material is bamboo. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that can be harvested without causing damage to the environment. It is also very durable and can be used for a variety of purposes, including flooring, furniture, and textiles.
Another sustainable material is reclaimed wood. Reclaimed wood is wood that has been salvaged from old buildings or other sources. By using reclaimed wood in your interior design, you are giving new life to materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
Recycled materials are also a great option for sustainable interior design. For example, recycled glass can be turned into beautiful countertops or tiles. Recycled plastic can be used to make furniture or even flooring.
Investing in high-quality, durable pieces that are built to last like our Made to Measure furniture pieces not only reduces waste but also saves money in the long run. Opt for furniture made from sustainable materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood or recycled plastics, and avoid pieces with toxic finishes or harmful chemicals.
We also recommend considering the versatility of the furniture – pieces that can be repurposed or adapted to different spaces and styles will have a longer lifespan. By choosing furniture that is not only beautiful but also sustainable, you can create a home that is both stylish and eco-friendly.

Upcycling and reupholstery techniques not only reduce waste but also add character and personality to a space. Win-win!
Upcycling involves taking an object that has reached the end of its life and turning it into something new and useful. For example, an old ladder can be transformed into a bookshelf or a set of drawers can be repurposed as a unique side table. By giving new life to old objects, we can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Reupholstery is another key technique for sustainable interior design. Instead of buying new furniture, consider reupholstering existing pieces. Not only does this save money, but it also reduces the amount of waste generated by manufacturing new products. Additionally, reupholstering allows you to customise the look of your furniture to fit your personal style. It's a real winner with our clients.
By reducing energy consumption in our homes, we can decrease our carbon footprint and save money on utility bills.
There are several ways to increase energy efficiency in your home's interior design. First, consider the lighting. Switching to LED bulbs can reduce energy usage by up to 80% compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. If you want to go a step further, installing dimmer switches can help regulate the amount of light used and save energy.
Try maximising natural light by adding a lick of bright paint to the walls or utilising mirrors to bounce light around your room. Why not try to position furniture away from windows to avoid blocking light. Not only does natural light reduce energy consumption and lower costs, but it also has a positive effect on mental and physical health.
You're also going to want to consider the appliances and electronics in your home. Look for energy-efficient models when shopping for new appliances, and unplug electronics when they are not in use to avoid wasting energy on standby power.

Are you looking to transform your living space but overwhelmed by the thought of doing it alone? Working with a local interior designer may be the solution you need. Better that, a designer that is local to you!
As an independent Yorkshire based interior designer, I have seen firsthand the benefits that clients get from collaborating with a local designer who understands your aesthetic, lifestyle, and budget.
In this post, I'm sharing three key advantages of working with a local interior designer, from saving time and money to accessing unique resources and design expertise.
Local interior designers are often able to give more personalised attention to your project. They can meet with you in person to discuss your needs and preferences, and they may have a better understanding of the local design industry and market.
A local interior designer will have a better understanding of the local building codes, regulations and suppliers, which can save you time and money. They may also have connections with local contractors, painters and other professionals that can help streamline the renovation process.
By working with a local designer, you can save money on shipping and other logistics costs, which can be a significant expense when working with larger design firms.
Independent and local designers often prioritise sustainable design practices and locally-sourced materials, reducing the environmental impact of your project while supporting the local economy.
Supporting local businesses is an excellent way to strengthen your community and promote economic development. By working with a local interior designer, you can feel good about investing in your community and helping to create local jobs.

When it comes to living room layouts, some spaces can be challenging to work with. It can feel frustrating when awkward nooks and corners can cause havoc when planning a space. We might start to feel frustrated that our lounge doesn't look like they do in Instagram or Pinterest!
However, with a little creativity and thinking outside the box, at Grandad's Shed we believe you can transform an awkward living room into a cosy and functional space. Here are some ideas for making the most out of a challenging living room layout.
This can be particularly useful for large or open-plan spaces, where you want to make the most of every inch whilst still creating a warm and homely space.
So how do you achieve this? It can be as simple as clever use of furniture placement, area rugs, wall paint or lighting.
For example, you might create a seating area with a sofa and armchairs on a large rug, a reading nook with a cosy armchair and bookshelf, or a workspace with a desk, chair and practical lighting. By defining these separate zones, you can make your living room feel more organised, spacious, and functional - no matter the size or shape.
Got a tired armchair or sofa that could do with a facelift? Discover our reupholstery services here.
Adding made-to-measure furniture is a clever solution for awkward living room layouts. Custom furniture can be tailored to fit the specific dimensions and shape of the room, maximising the available space and creating a cohesive look.
Consider investing in a window seat or built-in shelving unit that fits seamlessly into the nooks and crannies of your living room. Not only will this add functionality to the space, but it will also elevate the overall aesthetic. They can truly transform a challenging living room layout into a unique and stylish space.
If you need a helping hand with picking out the perfect option for you, get in touch to chat with us or explore some past projects for inspiration here.
Incorporating mirrors into your living room design is a simple and effective way to make the most of your awkward layout.
Mirrors can make a room appear larger and brighter by reflecting light and creating the illusion of depth. Try hanging a large mirror on one of the walls to create a focal point and draw the eye away from the awkward layout.
You can also place smaller mirrors strategically throughout the space to reflect light and create a sense of openness. What's more, mirrored furniture like our Puglia Furniture Range can add both functionality and style while further enhancing the illusion of space.
If you're still struggling with an awkward living room layout, playing with angles can be a clever solution to create a more functional space. Try angling your furniture to create a more dynamic flow and open up the room.
For example, instead of placing your sofa directly against the wall, you might try positioning it at a diagonal angle for a more interesting and visually appealing layout. You can also play with the angles of your accent chairs, coffee table, and rugs to create a cohesive and inviting space. Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles until you find the perfect arrangement for your living room - especially if there's no such thing as a straight wall in your space!
One of the best ways to deal with an awkward living room layout is to use the walls to your advantage. This means utilising vertical space with floating shelves, wall-mounted storage units, and hanging plants. You can also create a gallery wall with a mix of artwork, mirrors, and decorative objects to draw attention away from the awkward areas of the room. Explore our range of Pictures and Posters here.
Another favourite trick during our interior design services is to install floor-to-ceiling curtains to create the illusion of higher ceilings and a more spacious feel. It draws the eye up and add a perfect mix of drama and cosiness to the room.

At Grandad's Shed, we understand the importance of colour in creating a cohesive and visually pleasing space for the whole family to enjoy. However, with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right colour combination for your home. Where do you start? It can lead to a lot of indecision and therefore your walls stay that whitewash that was put on when you moved in.
That's why we've compiled a list of 3 failsafe interior design colour combination tricks to help you transform your space into the oasis you deserve.
Neutrals are a classic choice for any space, as they provide a timeless and sophisticated look. However, too much beige or white can make a room feel dull and lifeless. That's why we recommend incorporating a pop of colour into your neutral palette. This can be achieved through a vibrant accent wall, colourful throw pillows, or a bold piece of artwork. Not only does this add visual interest to the space, but it also allows the neutral tones to serve as a backdrop, highlighting the colourful accents.
Some popular colour choices to pair with neutrals include navy blue, emerald green, and blush pink. These colours add depth and dimension to the space without overpowering the calming effect of the neutrals.
Monotone colour schemes involve using colours that are adjacent to each other on the colour wheel. This creates a harmonious and cohesive look, as the colours share similar undertones. For example, a room designed with shades of blue, green, and purple creates a soothing and relaxing atmosphere.
When choosing a monotone colour scheme, it's important to consider the intensity of the colours. A room with all bright, bold colours can feel overwhelming and chaotic. Instead, we recommend using varying shades of the same colour family to create depth and interest.
Complementary colours are those that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. This creates a high-contrast and visually striking look. Some popular complementary colour combinations include blue and orange, yellow and purple, and red and green.
When using complementary colours, it's important to balance the intensity of the colours. For example, a room with bright red walls and green furniture can feel overwhelming. Instead, we recommend using one colour as the dominant shade and incorporating the complementary colour in small accents throughout the space.
Choosing the right colour combination for your home can be a daunting task. However, by following these 3 failsafe interior design colour combinations, you can create a space that is not only visually pleasing but also reflects your personal style and creates a sense of comfort and relaxation. Remember, colour is a powerful tool in interior design, and with the right combination, you can transform your space into the oasis you deserve.
When it comes to interior design, creating the illusion of space is a highly coveted goal. Whether you live in a quaint cottage or simply want to make a room feel more open and airy, there are a few simple design tricks you can use to make the most of your space.
Here are three interior design tips that will make any room look bigger:
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more spacious is to use light colours on the walls and floors. Light colours reflect more light, making a room feel brighter and more open. White, beige, and soft pastels are all great options for creating a light and airy feel in a room. If you want to add some interest to the space, try using different shades of the same colour to create depth and texture.

Mirrors are a great way to make a room feel larger and more open. They reflect light and create the illusion of depth, making a room feel more spacious than it actually is. You can hang a large mirror on one wall to create a focal point, or you can use several smaller mirrors to create a gallery wall. Just be sure to place your mirrors strategically so that they reflect the best parts of the room.

When it comes to furniture, less is often more. In a small space, it's important to choose furniture that is appropriately scaled. Large pieces of furniture can make a room feel cramped and crowded, while smaller pieces will help create the illusion of space. Consider choosing furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a storage ottoman or a coffee table with built-in storage. This will help you make the most of your space and keep clutter to a minimum.
In addition to choosing the right size of furniture, you should also pay attention to the style and color. Furniture that is too dark or too busy can make a room feel smaller, while furniture that is light and simple will help create a more open feel. You can also choose furniture with clean lines and minimal ornamentation to create a more modern and streamlined look.

Creating the illusion of space in a room is a matter of choosing the right colours, adding mirrors, and selecting the right furniture. By following these three interior design tips, you can make any room feel larger and more open, no matter how small it may be. Which is your favourite?
I get it. Choosing the right coffee table can be a daunting task, as it's not only a functional piece of furniture but also a focal point of your living room. With so many styles, sizes, and materials to choose from, it's easy to get overwhelmed. So, in this blog post, I'll guide you through the process of picking out the perfect coffee table that fits your style, needs, and budget. No stress!
The size and proportion of the coffee table are crucial factors to consider when purchasing one. You should measure the space where you plan to put the coffee table to ensure that it will fit perfectly.
One top measurement which usually goes under the radar is to think about the height of the coffee table. Particularly consider this in relation to the seating height of the furniture around it. Ideally, the coffee table should be at the same height as the cushions or slightly lower.
Coffee tables come in various materials, including wood, glass, metal, and more. Selecting the right material depends on your taste, lifestyle, and the existing decor of the room.
For example, a glass coffee table would work well in a modern, minimalist space, while a wooden one would blend well with traditional decor. You should also consider the shape and style of the coffee table and ensure that it complements the overall aesthetic of the room.
Finally, consider the functionality of the coffee table. Will it be used primarily for holding drinks and snacks, or will it also serve as a storage space? A coffee table with drawers or shelves underneath can be a great option for storing books, magazines, or other items.
Another of my favourite tips is to consider the shape of the coffee table and how it will work with your needs. A round coffee table may be better for a room with children as it has no sharp corners, while a square or rectangular table may be better for holding more items.

Remember to take your time and choose a coffee table that you truly love and that will serve your needs for years to come.

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, and creating a space that feels like a personal oasis is essential. In this post, we'll provide you with a checklist to help you transform your bedroom into a stylish and comfortable haven. From selecting the perfect lighting to choosing the right bedding, we've got you covered.
Colour is an essential element in bedroom design. It sets the mood and atmosphere of the room. Choose a colour scheme that reflects your personality and matches the style of your furniture and decor. Soft pastels are perfect for a calming and relaxing ambience.
In order to create a space that’s going to set you up for a good night's sleep, I recommend picking a limited palette. One of my favourite tips to nail this is to opt for a tonal colour palette. A couple of shades of calming blues and greens work wonders for creating a space that you can’t wait to retire to at the end of a busy day.

In order to create a cosy and stylish bedroom, it's important to consider furniture and decor early on. Choose a comfortable and spacious bed and we always recommend pairing it with matching nightstands. Add a dresser for extra storage and a comfy seating area for reading or lounging if you have the space.
Storage and organisation play a crucial role in a strong bedroom design. A cluttered and disorganised bedroom can make it difficult to relax and unwind. To create a peaceful and functional space, try adding storage solutions such as built-in wardrobes, under-bed storage containers, and floating shelves. We offer custom Made to Measure furniture services which help fill those awkward spaces and maximise your space.
Incorporate decorative elements like curtains, rugs, and wall art to bring the space to life and create your own unique sanctuary.
Top tip: Remember to keep the overall style and colour palette cohesive for a polished look.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the ambience of a bedroom. It can create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere or a vibrant and energising one, depending on the type of lighting used.
Ambient lighting is the foundational layer of your lighting scheme. It's your bread and butter, creating a canvas to layer on top of. This usually includes your ceiling lighting, wall lights and any natural light.
To achieve a balanced and inviting ambience, consider incorporating a mix of overhead lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Dimmer switches can also help to adjust the brightness of the room as needed. And don't forget that selecting the right light bulbs with warm tones can enhance the overall feel of the space.

Maximising vertical space is a great way to save space in your home or office. Consider installing shelves or cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling. This will allow you to store more items without taking up valuable floor space.
Another option is to use tall furniture pieces such as bookcases or wardrobes to make the most of your vertical space. With a little creativity, you can transform your space into a functional and organised area.

Making use of hidden spaces is a great way to save space in your home. Look for areas such as under the bed, inside cabinets, or above doors that can be utilised. Install shelves or hanging organisers to make the most of these spaces.
Additionally, furniture that doubles as storage, such as ottomans or benches with lift-up seats, can also be handy. Take this under-the-stairs built-in cupboard that we created for our client. What was once an unused space hidden under the stairs is now a smart and functional storage space. The side panel opens to create even more storage! Much like 2022, this year's trends root into sustainability and longevity whilst also supporting a sense of wellbeing in the home.
Excited to learn more? Let's dive in!
If you're a regular reader of the Grandad's Shed blog, you'll know just how much of a fan we are of relaxing grey, blue and green tones. Whilst we don't imagine we'll be leaving them behind anytime soon, 2023 sees us embracing earthier tones in our colour schemes.
To create a warm and inviting atmosphere, start by incorporating neutral tones such as beige, taupe, and grey. You can use these colours as a base and then layer them with browns and our favourite greens and blues to create a more energetic look.
If you're looking for a look in your room with more vibrancy, we recommend adding accents with pops of vibrant colours like oranges, yellows, and reds will give your space a unique and personal feel.
More than ever with this look, finish your earth toned look by adding texture to your design, incorporate natural materials like wood, stone, and wool.

Warm and inviting, this timeless style is set to become especially popular in 2023 as it combines the rustic charm of a traditional farmhouse with modern touches, such as contemporary furniture pieces, bright colour palettes, and natural materials.
The modern farmhouse look is also a great way to create a unique and inviting home, as it can be customised with a variety of different elements to fit individual tastes and preferences.
Creating the modern farmhouse look in your interior design project can be done in a few simple steps. Start by using neutral tones, such as whites, beiges, and creams (see how well this ties in with our earth tones trend too?!) as your base palette. Next we recommend incorporating natural elements like wood, rattan, and jute to bring a rustic feel to the room. Mix in vintage and antique pieces to create a timeless look, and use accent pieces in bright colours to add a little pop.
Not only is the modern farmhouse look aesthetically pleasing but it's also a relaxing look to hang out in.
You can also use lots of texture with fabrics like linen and cotton, and layer rugs for added interest. Finally, don't forget to add in plenty of plants and greenery for a relaxing, homely feel.

Investing in key furniture pieces is a great way to make sustainability part of your home decor in 2023. Furniture pieces are often one of the most expensive and long-lasting items in your home, so investing in pieces that have been made with sustainable materials and processes can help reduce your environmental impact.
Sustainable furniture pieces are made from materials that are more durable and require less energy and resources to produce. Plus, buying sustainably-made furniture pieces helps support companies and designers that are committed to responsible practices. Many of the furniture pieces that are trending in 2023 also incorporate unique designs and shapes, making them a great way to add a stylish touch to your home. By investing in timeless furniture pieces now, you can help create a more sustainable home and enjoy your furniture for years to come.
If sustainability is also a priority for your interior design projects in 2023, why not try exploring our Reupholstery or Made to Measure services?

You are likely already surrounding yourself with colours that you love without evening thinking about it. Two great places for this is within your favourite piece of artwork - or even your wardrobe. Open it up and pick out a few items or accessories that you wear time and time again. Chances are you see a theme appearing which could translate well into shaping your decorating choices around your home.
We've said it before and we'll say it again because it's that important. Colour is such a powerful tool in setting a tone for the mood of a space. So whether you're looking to create a calm space or a productive zone, then clever use of colour can help achieve this.
Interested in learning more? Discover 5 colours to boost your mood here.
Whilst we are big fans of a tonal colour scheme in a room, it's important you do choose a variety of shades and depths to add interest to your room without feeling chaotic. Think of it like a scale. You've got got one dark colour, one light colour, and one accent colour to cut through your space. Try the classic interior design colour palette rule of:
60% of your room in a dominant colour (e.g. walls, rugs and sofas)
30% of your room in your secondary colour (e.g. curtains, blinds, painted furniture or accent chairs)
and 10% in and accent colour. (e.g. throws, cushions, artwork, accessories). Depending on the finished look you're going for, this could be brighter or more subtle. Careful with this one! It can be easy to keep throwing in more patterns and colours but, unless you're going for a maximal look, this can result in a busy feeling in a space.
Ready to explore colours? Shop the Frenchic Colour Chart here.
Both daylight and electric light can massively alter the appearance of different colours in a room. Before you jump in to apply one shade of grey throughout the house, take some time to view it at different times of day and in all rooms. You might notice that the cooler light of a north-facing room can handle a little more warmth in the colour to avoid looking too stark.
Top tip: Any room painted in white or pale tones will reflect the colours of that around it. So your wooden floor or red rug could reflect onto your white walls to change its appearance in different lights.

If you've been following our Holiday Let Diaries, you'll know how much we adore mixing different themes throughout a property. But it's all done in a very deliberate manner! When creating distinct looks in different rooms around your home, we recommend picking a complimentary colour between connecting rooms. We'd also suggest picking up a themes that runs throughout the property such as your metallics that remain consistent throughout the journey around your home. Having these threads creates a cohesion which pleases the eye.

Have fun with finding your interior colour scheme. Even if you do make a mistake it’s still an easy process as painting to mix things up again. And if you're looking for some extra help with your living room? Vicki Kress Interiors could be the perfect fit. Click here to find out more.
Ambient lighting is the foundational layer of your lighting scheme. It's your bread and butter, creating a canvas to layer on top of. This usually includes your ceiling lighting, wall lights and any natural light.
This moody background lighting can often be overlooked in a home's design and we tend to think spotlights and ceiling lighting. Table lighting, however, is a Grandad's Shed favourite as it covers all three areas of practicality and versatility.
Pendant lighting is now very popular and generally, ceiling lights traditionally were rather unattractive and often overlooked. Not any more! Pendant lights have the power to really transform your room. Hanging pendant lights or a chandelier in your bedroom is a great way to add not only light but beauty and elegance.

Now let's add something with a practical focus. Task lighting does exactly what it says on the tin, it lights up a space (or part of it) to help you carry out a specific task. If you have a reading nook in the corner of your living room then this might look like a floor lamp to help you relax and devour your books. If you have a desk space in your living room, the light might be a little more direct, perhaps a bright table light over your work station. Often these lights are a little more functional in their looks such as adjustable arms - although that doesn't mean they can't be beautiful.

Now we're down to the last and most funs step - mood lighting! This is where we can really let our creativity run wild. It's perfect for cosy evenings around a fire or pouring a glass of wine with a friend. Ambient lighting is used to create drama in a room, highlighting your artwork, fun architectural elements of your room or adding a glow to your bookshelves.
Some of our favourites are lanterns, string lights, light strips or using dimmable bulbs to enhance your table and ceiling lights.

This blog is here with some inspiration for you to solve just that problem! We’ve sourced some great Pinterest inspiration for fun and festive ways to showcase Christmas cards from your nearest and dearest.
All image credit: Pinterest.
If you’ve been around here for long, you’ll know just how much we love using fresh foliage to decorate our home at this time of year. Fireplaces, sideboards - even our trusty piano isn’t safe from our foraging trips in the Yorkshire Wolds. That’s why we adore the idea of combining a lovely display of foliage taking centre stage with lovely pops of festive fun with the added Christmas cards dotted around.
Doors often get overlooked when it comes to festive decoration. But we think they are a great blank canvas for allowing your beautiful cards to really pop. Pick out a ribbon in one of your key decorating colours and then grab some pegs or pins to add your cards down the lengths.
You could even try this over bannisters. Tie lengths of ribbons around your handrail and then top with a gorgeous garland.
Another product of a successful foliage foraging trip, this is a quick and easy method that will make good use of your favourite vase or pot. Drop in a few twigs and use small pegs to add your favourite card designs. You could even add some baubles or fairy lights - or even paint the twigs for some extra fun.
With a long stick, a piece of ribbon or string and a little creative thinking, you can create a DIY Christmas card hanger in a matter of minutes. Alongside looking gorgeous, this piece has the added benefit of being transportable. Just pick it up and find a new place to hang - amazing.
Real or faux, we adore this idea of accentuating a wreath with Christmas cards. Slot your selection of cards between the leaves and step back to admire!

]]>With this in mind, here's our checklist of the 9 must dos to get our homes ready for all that the festive period brings our way.
Our first step before we take on any project is to declutter. This is often when our handy made to measure furniture pieces really come into their own as space is optimised for your unique storage needs. This is easily the least enjoyable task but it's a must do as with a clean surface we can then start building our festive home knowing everything is in order.
What's more, a tidier and more organised house now will mean less stress post-Christmas when there's lots of extra items to find homes for.

With guests popping in and out a lot more frequently, now's the time to stock the pantry with nibbles and games. These will be ready to whip out when those late notice guests come knocking, saving you the stress of rushing to the shop.
We don't know about you but it can feel like a constant stream of presents are coming through the door at this time of year. And they've got to go somewhere. Sometimes it also means hiding them away from prying eyes of partners or kids.
Our solution is to set up a present wrapping station so you can quickly and effectively wrap or store your presents ready to go straight under the tree. If your home office has waved goodbye to work for the rest of the year, why not clear it off and lay out your favourite wrap, tags and tape ready to wrap to your hearts content.

Do you often find yourself buying new Christmas decorations with no real idea of where it will go - or even if it will suit the rest of your ornaments? We've all been there! What we recommend is getting everything out of the loft and on a table. From here you can create clear decor themes which can apply to different corners or rooms in your home. For example, jewel toned objects could head into the lounge to compliment your tree, whilst your white and wooden accessories might be better suited to your kitchen or bedroom. Have a play around and remember to really root into what you adore: you're the one who's going to be admiring these decorations day in, day out after all!

With many more social events and shopping trips, we often find ourselves getting busier and busier as December rolls on. Before you know it, you're coming in late on a weekday evening or you've invited your neighbour round for a last minute dinner before you realise you've got nothing in the fridge. We love to bulk cook hearty winter meals before popping the leftovers in the freezer ready for such emergencies. It's a lifesaver!
Here are five cosy winter recipes to roll your sleeves up and get stuck into.
Not only is your decorated table going to be a real focal point of your dining room decoration, but it also means you're ready to welcome guests at the drop of a hat. We love to start with a gorgeous centrepiece and work out from there. Add candles, foliage and beautiful glassware to create a stunning design that's going to make you smile every time you walk past.
You might like: Kitchen and Tableware
This one is a simple tip but can make a world of difference when we're preparing to welcome guests. Making the beds up for overnight guests now means one less thing to do when they are about to arrive. Don't forget to add some soft textures like cushions and throws to help make them feel at home.

Home bars became all the rage during lockdown but now it seems no social space should be without one! They're a great tool when you're hosting family and friends and can be as paired back or extravagant as you need it to be. Stock up on your favourite tipples and lay out some beautiful glassware ready to share with guests over a mince pie or two.

At Grandad's Shed, we love to add foliage and greenery to lift a space. And this is no different at Christmas. Whilst we might first think of the obvious Christmas tree, there's also a multitude of different places to adorn your home with festive foliage. In the past, we've decorated our mantlepiece, sideboards and stairwells in style using trimmings from our tree and fronds scavenged from our winter walks. Check out this blog for more.

]]>Your bedroom should be a space you look forward to stepping into at the end of a busy day. If it’s not enticing you at the moment, this blog is for you. I’m here to run you through our tried and tested bedroom design tips for your overdue bedroom upgrade.
Do Keep the Colours Limited
Let’s start with the basics: your colour palette.
You might like: Bedroom Furniture
The largest bed that can fit in your room might be top of the list but it could actually create an illusion of a lack of space in your room. Make sure to factor in breathing space around your bedroom. That might mean reducing your bed size or holding back on adding in that extra bookcase. We’re after a calming space here so a refined, clutter-free space is a must.
Another brilliant way to achieve this is to invest in some clever built in furniture. At Grandad's Shed we love to see the impact our made to measure pieces can have on a space. What once felt a little clunky can look sleek, stylish - and with more or better thought out storage to suit your lifestyle. Amazing and perfect for those awkward nooks and corners!

Do Layer Lighting
Lighting in a bedroom is a very important factor to consider when designing your space. Whilst we might not spend too many waking hours in the space, it still needs to support books being read, clothes being tried on and relaxed breakfasts in bed.

Don’t forget your soft textures
Duvet, pillows and sheets? Check. But don’t stop there! A soft textured blanket or natural linen throw can work wonders on creating a relaxing space for yourself to unwind in. Top off the bed with a couple of plump cushions in a fun pattern to inject a touch of your personality into your bed. Take a look at our range of throws and cushions here.

Do Dress Your Windows
Whatever you do, don’t make your window dressing an afterthought! Here at Grandad’s Shed, we’re so proud of our portfolio of gorgeous curtains, blinds and pelmets made to measure in your choice of stunning fabrics.
Not only do these function as an extension of the style of the room, but they’re also a practical must-have to ensure a bliss night's sleep without an early wake up from the sun streaming in.

Don’t ignore the ceiling
Lying in bed often means we spend just as much time staring at the ceiling as we do the four walls around us. Our answer or adding more interest? Get out that paint brush! If you paint the ceiling in a small room the same as the walls, it will help help create a cosy cocooning feel within the space which works well for creating a relaxing bedroom space. On the other hand, if you've got high ceilings, try a complimentary or contrasting colour to add interest to your space.

In this blog, I want to share my top tips for choosing the perfect armchair for your home. You’re going to spend a lot of relaxing hours in it so let’s find the ideal fit.
First up, it’s time to get that tape measure out. It goes without saying but sometimes we can get so caught up in the comfort and beauty of the piece that we forget to see if it will fit or suit our space. To help client’s visualise a new armchair in their space, I recommend marking on the floor with masking tape or newspaper to get an idea of the dimensions which will match the space.
Now that’s the basics out of the way, onto the fun stuff.
From a nursing chairs to a cosy reading nook, there are lots of different purposes for an armchair in your home - and with it, a variety of requirements we need from our seats.
Similarly, everyone likes to sit differently. Feet up, curled up or perhaps hanging over the armrest. Really think about your perfect comfort set up and look for an armchair which will meet these needs.
It’s worth pointing out here that comfort doesn’t have to mean unattractive. You really can have both style and substance when it comes to your armchair. Whilst a traditional armchair is perfect for resting your head and settling down for the evening, a statement armchair will double up as a piece of artwork in your space. Take a look at our range here for a little inspiration.
The material for your armchair is the final key piece of the puzzle. Not only does it need to look good, but it also needs to stand the test of time as your armchair will sit pride of place in your home for years to come.
For our reupholstery service (see more below), we offer a wide range of different materials from buttery leathers to twills and dramatic velvets. Get in touch today to chat more about the perfect option for your space.
One top tip before committing to a material is to consider how often you’ll be using your armchair. If children, pets or food are often involved, then consider something a little more practical that can be easily wiped down.
On the other hand, if you’re after something with that wow factor for your Zoom backdrop, perhaps a fun velvet will work well in your space? We’ve got plenty of patterns and finishes to choose from so do get in touch and we can chat more about the best option for you and your home.
Now it wouldn’t be a Grandad’s Shed blog without a mention of one of our favourite service: reupholstery. The reason why this continues to be one of our most popular offerings is because it can be truly transformational - and oh so satisfying.
Whether it’s a tired family heirloom in need of a new lease of life…
…Or a antique shop bargain that has all the good bones but lacking pizzaz…
…Reupholstering your prize piece can add comfort and beauty to your cosy armchair space. And it’s not just armchairs and sofa’s that we can work our magic on! Footstools, headboards and even motorbike seats can be transformed from drab to fab.
----
Don't forget to take a look at our range of armchairs here or discover more about our reupholstery service here! If you'd like a guiding hand with your interior project, please call Vicki Kress Interiors on 01759 306777 to arrange your Home Visit.
]]>This week on the blog, we've got a very exciting update for the Holiday Let Diaries. The project has been an absolute joy to work on and create the individual room schemes whilst knitting the whole space together to create a cohesive and luxury rental destination.
In the first blog, we went back to basics and looked at the early stages of planning our project. This time, we're all about showcasing the transformations we've made to the space - including some exciting sneak peeks at the finished product!
Keep your eyes for the full tour very soon! Don't forget to sign up to my newsletter here to make sure you never miss an update.
Here at Grandad's Shed, every project follows a very similar plan. We start by soaking up the space and really getting to know your goals for the project. Then it's onto pen and paper to pull together a mood board and plan. If we're working together throughout the project, we'll be on hand to manage orders, deliveries and key design decisions throughout the process. Then comes everyone's favourite part: the finishing touches. The lights go in, the blinds go up and the accessories get placed in their new homes.
In this exciting Holiday Let project, each bedroom has its own name and a theme to drive each design. To create a cohesive feel through the whole space, we're threading elements of natural materials which also tie a thread between the room themes. When it comes to the individual space, we have had lots of fun being extra creative to the individual brief.
Coast is a space to epitomise the stunning Easy Yorkshire coastline. The scheme uses playful colours with a dreamy ‘seaweed’ wall art, seahorses and seashells, and furnished with our Beaumont furniture range, a classic fresh white styling with sculptured corners. You'll definitely feel the fresh, relaxing feeling of the seaside when you enter the room.
The beautiful 'Burnby Hall Gardens' features stunning water lily fabrics mixed with dragonfly scatter cushions. We've used a soft grey tone bedroom furniture range which is one of our popular ranges, The Thornby. I chose this range as the lime-washed tops and chrome handles blend classic and contemporary influences. The Burnby also includes lovely cool green walls from our Frenchic wall paint collection Green with Envy.
The Allerthorpe bedroom is based around woodland scenes. We've used classic plaid fabrics and dragonfly wall art to nail this look. The room is be furnished with our Holker furniture in a radiant blue painted finish. It's a good solid range that can be so versatile with different themes and spaces.
The Millington bedroom design plays on the beautiful woodland and valley walks. We welcome the beguiling beauty of nature into the room with an exquisite pattern of gently falling leaves and delicate ferns, in rich shades of green and tea – all complimented with our Thornby bedroom range, a golden orb lighting and sunburst mirror to add a touch of drama.
Finally, the Wold's Way Bedroom takes inspiration from the peaceful and charming Yorkshire 'Wolds'. Gently rolling rills and perfect picnic spots drive this design which features a beautiful wallpaper adorned with birds, berries, grasses and seed heads. It's the next best thing to a real walk in the Wolds!

]]>In this blog, I'm going to guide you through the design and decor ideas to make the most of your loft conversion.
Chances are your attic room has awkward corner and angles. Instead of shoving a piece of furniture in front of the area, I always encourage clients to optimise that space.
A chimney breast is a great example of this. This loft room is built into the roof space which means it's full of awkward angles. It was screaming out for some clever storage solutions as its been designed to be a nifty office through the day. We built cupboards and shelves around the chimney breast to create a functional and yet beautiful area. No cover up necessary!
We finished this look off with Cirsiun wallpaper on the chimney breast to make it a real feature of the room. This pattern perfectly matches the stunning roman blinds in the dormer window.
Tucked up at the top of the house, a room like this is just crying out for cosy window seat or children's reading nook.
With this cosy reading corner, our client needed a space to relax and unwind. The dormer window spaces were perfect for it. So it was out with the awkward pieces of furniture that blocked the view out of the window, and in with a beautiful made to measure solution. And all topped off with an upholstered seat cushion and a pretty cascade roman blind build into the recess of the window.
If your room can fit it, you could add in a comfy armchair to create your reading nook. Whatever you go for, finish it off with a warm blanket and a good light to make the most of your new favourite corner.
An attic conversion usually means all new everything: walls, floor, doors...
I love to use this as an opportunity to inject some character and charm into the new space. Here are some of my favourite ways to do just that:

So whether it's a small corner of an open plan room, or a large living room, in this week's blog we're running you through our top tips for creating the ultimate cosy space.
Natural materials aren't just for rustic country cottages - they're an essential for creating a tranquil and luxurious space. Throw a woollen blanket over the corner of your sofa, add in a soft rug or place a wicker basket by the fire filed with kindling. Guaranteed you'll instantly notice the difference in mood in the room!
Colour can have such a transformative effect on an interior space. If you're struggling to pick a colour, take a peek at our Colours to Boost Your Mood Blog for more inspiration. Earthier neutral tones can add warmth without feeling overwhelming whereas richer greens and blues can add drama with a peaceful undertone.
If your lounge area a corner of a bigger room, try colour blocking to zone the space for relaxation.
We've got a fabulous range of Frenchic paints for you to update your living room. Click here to discover more.
By lighting fire or candles in your living room, you invite a real feeling of tranquility to your space. Scented candles have the added bonus of adding a beautiful fragrance to the room. Scent often goes under the radar but is an essential aspect for creating a restful space.
If candles aren't your thing, take a look at our range of diffusers to add that extra dimension to your space and delight your senses.
Candles and fire are a great source of mood lighting but we often need to layer this up with other light sources to add depth and warmth to a lounge. We're talking:
Lounge lighting is so important that we've previously written a whole post on it. Take a look here to discover more.
Chances are you're not spending much time standing up in your living room. A comfortable seat (or two) is going to be a sound investment in your enjoyment and relaxation in the space.
Here you've got a couple of options. You could invest in a brand new sofa or armchair to maximise your use of the space. Or, if it's the perfect size but your current seating is feeling a little tired then it could be worth investigating reupholstery.
Here at Grandad's Shed, we believe that people should be given the option to make their furniture as unique as their family and give your special piece a vibrant new lease of life. Click here to learn more about our service and get in touch to discuss your seating makeover.
It's a simple truth that clutter makes us stressed and unfocussed. And those are two things we don't want in our restful lounge spaces.
Wicker baskets are a brilliant low cost option for tidying wires, magazines, kindling - and so much more. What's more, they also check the box of being made from natural materials (see tip #1). Take a look at our range of baskets here.
From new builds to period properties, our homes all feature their own unique quirks and corners. And sometimes this requires something custom to make the most of the space. That's where our Made to Measure Furniture service really comes into it's own. Built in bookshelves, blanket boxes and alcove storage are some of the most common ways we team up with customers across Yorkshire to maximise storage - and relaxation - in a living room.

What will you be adding to your living room to create a relaxing space? Let me know in the comments below!
We may well be heading into the back end of the summer but there's still plenty of time to enjoy our outside spaces. If you've been avoiding hanging out in your garden because it feels a little, well lacklustre, then you're in the right place! In this blog, I'm chatting you through my top tips for bringing the inside out and creating a space that's a dream to hang out in all summer long.
If you've seen our styled lounge, you'll know we can't get enough of flowers and foliage. And there's a great reason to add more to your space - take a read of our blog on creating a productive space to find out more.
When it comes to our outdoor dining spaces, we always like to accessorise with a bunch of flowers cut from the garden or use a bunch of our faux flowers to mimic the look. The beauty of using faux means they can be brought inside and enjoyed for months to come even when the nights are long and the days are cold.
We could talk until the cows come home about the importance of lighting in a space - indoor or outdoor. When dusk begins to settle, lighting really comes into its own in an outdoor space. We're big fans of lanterns for their flexibility and power to add some magic to any space.
We also love the ease of decorating a tree or wall with garlands or string lights. What's more, they can be taken inside and reused at Christmas and other celebrations throughout the year. A real flexible piece to add to your collection!
Outdoor mirrors are brilliant at catching the lights, reflecting gorgeous foliage and making a space feel bigger. It's a quick update that can really elevate your outdoor space in time for guests to be wowed. Take a look at our range of mirrors here.
Setting the table is routine when hosting guest inside but sometimes it can get neglected when it comes to dining outside. From seagrass placemats to ceramic jugs, we've got a stunning range of different tableware and kitchen accessories to style your outdoor dining space.
Cushions are a brilliant tool for bringing a cosy vibe to your outdoor dining or lounge space. They can truly transform a space from drab to fab in minutes - whilst also increasing the comfort factor.
When the sun sets but it's not time to head indoors then it's time to grab your throws. Pick up a warm woollen throw for an extra level of cosiness to carry you through the evening.
How will you be accessorising your outdoor space? Let me know in the comments below!
So in today's blog I'm going to share with you three of my favourite ways to create a productive space in your home.
As we've discussed on our blog, colour can make or break a space. Not only do we need to think about the type of natural light that hits a room, we also need to consider the mood we're creating in a space. If we want to create a productive office space, for example, we'd look to add colours that encouraged creativity and/or focus.
It will come as no surprise that grey or beige colour schemes can lead to gloomy feelings, therefore impacting our productivity in a space. It's also been reported that men also respond to purple and orange-dominated spaces in a similar way. So, what can we use instead?
We love to use blues and greens which have been proven in studies to be mentally stimulating. Yes, these colours aren't just about calm. This means they can be a great tool in living rooms with an office nook integrated in - by switching up the lighting (more on this below), you can have a multifunctional space with the same backdrop.
Yellow encourages creativity and playfulness. It might feel a little overwhelming to splash the colour all over the walls so we like to opt for accents or pops of the colour to boost our mood. Accents we've loved before including yellow flowers, vases, books or wall art.
Ready to test some colours to reinvigorate your space? Discover our range of Frenchic paint here.
Being productive in a space requires a different type of lighting than a cosy relaxing room that you might use in the evening. Correct lighting is so important to interior design that we've even written a whole blog on it! Take a look at the blog here.
Task lighting does exactly what it says on the tin, it lights up a space (or part of it) to help you carry out a specific task. In this case, it might be working at a desk, or over a chair to aid with reading. If you have a desk space in your living room, the light might be a little more direct, perhaps a bright table light over your workstation.
Often these lights are a little more functional in their looks such as adjustable arms - although that doesn't mean they can't be beautiful. Check out our range of gorgeous table and floor lamps here.
Top tip: if your space needs to function as both, don't forget to think about layering lighting in your design to effortlessly switch between work and pleasure!
You'll know that here at Grandad's Shed we love adding plants (both real and faux) into our own home and customer's designs. But did you know that a plant in an office significantly increases levels of concentration and satisfaction? In fact, some research even suggests it can increase productivity by 15%. Oh, and they clean the air too - amazing!
This is perhaps our favourite tip for designing a space for productivity as it's the quickest and easiest to check off. For a low maintenance option, take a look at our range of faux plants, flowers and foliage here.

At Grandad's Shed, there's almost nothing more exciting to us than a blank wall. The possibilities and creativity we can have with it feels almost never-ending! And whilst we love an art print or original piece to inject some personality into the blank space, we're finding ourselves drawn more and more to creative ways to decorate a wall. In this blog, I want to share some of my current favourite alternatives to a framed piece of art or canvas for our walls.
Quick, cost effective and highly impactful, this is fast becoming our favourite way to add personality into a blank space. Take your offcuts of wallpaper and pop them in a frame or add some simple beading around them on your walls. Ta-dah!
We love seeing this style repeated down a long corridor to inject personality into an otherwise plain space.

When painting our rooms, we often stick to the classic white ceiling and white woodwork with a splash of colour on a wall or 4. I'm excited to see a recent shift of painted ceilings and woodwork evolving into a key trend that seems here to stay. It helps to frame your walls and add interest to any space.
Try accentuating your room's features with a lick of paint on your woodwork. Take the project we worked on with Sophie Robinson as a brilliant example of using colour around a wall to add vibrancy. Swap out the colours for a softer palette and you've got a muted relaxing space with real depth.
You could even add in some simple panelling in the lower half of the room to create a sense of grandeur and period charm, even in more modern properties.
If you paint the ceiling in a small room the same as the walls, it will help create a cosy cocooning feel within the space. If you've got high ceilings, try a complementary or contrasting colour to add drama to your space.

Our willow and rattan Twig Cow Head (a.k.a. Hamish) has long been a customer favourite which just shows the appetite for alternative pieces to decorate a wall. Here are some of our favourite ideas:
1. Use plates attached to the wall to create a gallery of gorgeous crockery. Perfect for kitchen or dining rooms.
2. Dig those old mirrors out of the loft and create a gallery wall. The best bit about this is the light that bounces around your space.
3. Or add in a piece of built in furniture which can showcase your favourite books and trinkets in all their glory. Storage meets wall decor! Take a look at our made to measure service for more.
Which is your favourite way to spice up a blank wall? Let me know in the comments below!

It's often assumed that the advice of a professional interior designer is a luxury that they can't afford, but it's a service just like any other. More often than not, people just need a bit of guidance and a sense of direction to help them achieve the home of their dreams.
In fact, working together on a project can often save you money because it helps you avoid costly mistakes in the long run whilst also sourcing products at a great price.
Our packages start from as little as £60. Take a look here to find out more and get in touch.
The foundations of working with an interior designer are for them to get to know you, your home and your tastes. That also means if there are two of you fighting it out over different styles, a designer is there to find a happy middle ground.
I believe individual consultations in client homes are invaluable for inspiring fabrics, furniture design and paint colour choices, giving window treatment advice, deciding how best to use a space, addressing lighting challenges and discussing room décor.
Like it's owner, each home is unique and working together on an interior project is all about optimising a space for you.
If you think interior design is all fluff and no substance, we're pleased to say you're mistaken! We take time to understand your goals for a space and any problems you are struggling within it. Of course, aesthetics are important. But there's no point in having a gorgeous looking space you can't use.
From lighting schemes to selecting pieces for visual balance, careful colour considerations to storage solutions, here at Grandad's Shed, we pride ourselves on functional solutions to your everyday problems. Take a look at this blog for some clever built in storage solutions.
Interior design shouldn't be the last thought in a renovation or build. In fact, it should be right there at the start of the process to ensure work is done with your end goal in mind.
Your home is where you likely spend the most amount of time so it's vital it's a space that brings you joy. In small spaces, clever design ideas are often needed more than ever to create space saving solutions that make a house a home.
If you're looking to dip your toe into the world of working with an interior designer, try picking the room that you spend most time in. If you work from home, perhaps that's your office? Or if you enjoy hosting friends and family perhaps it's your living-dining space that requires the most attention?

]]>Ah, there's nothing quite like a British Bank Holiday weekend. Whilst the weather might be temperamental, a couple of things remain the same. We all seem to attempt an al fresco meal only to head inside at an inevitable downpour or a flaky BBQ. And chances are we're putting on the overalls and working on some home improvements with the extra downtime.
So, before you fire up the BBQ, here are our top 3 decor ideas for a long weekend.
We love the transformative power of a beautiful wallpaper to take a space from drab to fab in an instant. And the best bit? It doesn't require an engineering degree or endless days of your time to make the impact.
Feeling nervous? Start with a small wall or chimney breast to get a fun shot of the design in your space. If you're enjoying the drama, roll it out across more walls!
If you're after a more relaxing weekend, why not browse through your selection of samples to pick out a favourite? Take a look at our range of Wallpaper Samples here.
We love getting creative with quirky objects as gorgeous unique wall art for our homes. A gallery wall is a fabulous way to create a fun showpiece that oozes with your own personality. You'll be guaranteed to make guest stop, stare and comment on your collection!
Start by collecting your own selection of art that you love. You could choose even numbers for symmetry or an odd number of pieces for a look that's more organic but equally pleasing on the eye.
Place your art on the floor to see how different pieces work next to each other. Don't forget to stand back and look at them all together so you can spot pieces that don't feel quite right. Once you're happy it's time to grab the hammer and nails - it's hanging time!
If you're after a slower paced long weekend, why not spend some time browsing our range of art to start your dream collection? Click here to take a look.
Whether the weather is playing ball or not, chances are we'll all be spending a lot more time in our gardens over a long weekend. At this time of year we love to give our outdoor space a little TLC as we bring the inside out.
This is such a big topic for us that we even wrote a whole blog on creating a space outside that feels like a real sanctuary. Click here to read more.
One of our favourite tips for making an outdoor space feel better is to hang a mirror. A handy trick indoors, by handing a mirror outside and surrounding it with foliage, you can make your space feel bigger and yet cosier in an instant.
Another of our favourite tips is to make use of lighting. We place table and floor lamps around corners of our rooms, so think about this accent lighting around your garden. There's something quite special about having candlelit lanterns on your patio table on a summer's evening, they capture romance and create a cosy warm glow. Create a glow with one of our outdoor lanterns, there's a great choice over on the website on the Lantern page.

Introducing the Holiday Let Diaries. In this first blog, we're going back to basics and looking at the process we are undertaking. Taking on our first top tip in our last post, we're planning out the whole project from the get go which means fewer headaches or last minute scrambles for decision making.
We can't wait to share more with you soon! Don't forget to sign up to my newsletter here to make sure you never miss an update.
I was invited to the holiday let and asked to work on the project to create a interior scheme throughout the 5 bed property. All whilst keeping with the property age and designing around the practicalities of a luxury holiday accommodation.
The property is a wonderful double fronted building with tons of potential. It sits in a central location in Pocklington. For those not familiar with it, Pocklington is a traditional country market town surrounded by spectacular countryside. It's neighbours are the East Coast and York which makes it a great destination for walkers and those looking for staycation in the English countryside.
The task requires us to compliment the local area of Pocklington and the stunning countryside, bringing into the scheme colours found in nature, wildlife and the coast.
The feelings we want to evoke requires the space to be cosy, warm and inviting whilst presenting some wow-factor throughout to create a sense of excitement. It's got to be photographic for promo shot, after all! We'll do this with the use of stunning fabrics, wall art with textures and create a memorable impact.
Balancing this, it needs practical durable furniture that will withstand the many visitors that will come in and out.
We've worked our scheme throughout the property including 5 x bedrooms, sunroom and living room, hallway and entrance, boot room - identifying key tourist attractions within Pocklington and surrounding hot spots to blur the lines between inside and out.
Each bedroom has it's own name and with this, a theme to tease out across the design. To create a cohesive feel through the whole space, we're threading elements of natural materials but in the individual spaces, we have room to be extra creative.
Take, for example, the beautiful 'Burnby Hall Gardens', the theme for one of the bedrooms. It will feature stunning water lily fabrics – and mixed with dragonfly scatter cushions. We'll use a soft grey tone bedroom furniture range which is one of our popular ranges, The Thornby. I chose this range as the lime-washed tops and chrome handles blend classic and contemporary influences. The Burnby will feature cool green walls from our Frenchic wall paint collection Green with Envy.
‘Coast’ is a space to epitomise the stunning Easy Yorkshire coastline. The scheme uses playful colours with a dreamy ‘seaweed’ wall art, seahorses and seashells, and furnished with our Beaumont furniture range, a classic fresh white styling with sculptured corners.
‘The Allerthorpe’ is based around woodland scenes. We'll use classic plaid fabrics and dragonfly wall art. The room will again be furnished with our Beaumont furniture in a radiant blue painted finish. It's a good solid range that can be so versatile with different themes and spaces.
Another scheme, ‘The Millington’, plays on the beautiful woodland and valley walks. We welcome the beguiling beauty of nature into the room with an exquisite pattern of gently falling leaves and delicate ferns, in rich shades of green and tea – all complimented with our Thornby bedroom range, a golden orb lighting and sunburst mirror to add a touch of drama.
For this project, we included a whole interior design concept document which includes:
Then the whole scheme is executed from start to finish.
I have my own team of trades who I work with all the time and they’ll meet me at your property on a nominated trade day. You will be there on hand too, of course, but I take the headache away from you by managing this process end to end.
Once we have a final list of products approved by you it’s time for us to go to all of our various suppliers and get invoices from them. This part of the interior design process can take a few days because for some projects there could be 20 different suppliers we’re getting product from (and sometimes even more).
As a guide, we tend to specify about 90% of products from our trade suppliers, not retailers. This not only secures you a lot of products your friends can’t buy in stores, but it also gets you better pricing, because we get trade discounts from our suppliers.
For deliveries, there are three options:
The style part of all project journeys is the last and most exciting component of the entire interior design process. This is where we come to your home and put all the furniture in its place as per the layout we provided in the concept document. Everything is unpacked and moved into place ready for you - and in this case, your guests - to enjoy.
At this stage, we’ll also line up trades to install the various items they need to install, where required. Our window people will come and install your curtains. Our electricians will come and install pendant lights if we’ve specified them. Our hangers will come to fix art and mirrors to the walls and so on.
In the next Holiday Let Diaries I'm going to chat you through our first steps of implementing the design, from electrics and lighting to getting a lick of paint on the walls. What do you think of the concept so far?
]]>Interior design can be so fun and exciting. It's the opportunity to create a space in your home that meets your functional needs whilst looking beautiful. The possibilities are endless! But if you're short of time or feeling overwhelmed by the process, the experience might feel more like a nightmare than a dream come true.
Whilst hiring an interior designer can feel like a big expense beyond their reach, I'm passionate about making great design accessible for all. It's a service like any other and with a bit of guidance and nudge in the right direction, together we can create a home of your dreams.
Here are 4 signs it's time to pick up the phone and hire an interior designer.
Maybe you've tried yourself. You've moved the sofa to the other side of the room, painted the walls - maybe even bought a new piece of furniture. But something just doesn't sit quite right with you. It still feels awkward or clunky and, even though you know yourself better than anyone else, the space doesn't feel like it's truly 'you'.
As an interior designer, a big part of my job is understanding your goals for the space, and effectively marrying this up with a space that aligns with your style. So if you're left feeling like your space isn't quite there, the guiding hand of an interior designer can help tease out your vision and bring together the room.
If you've just got your hands on the keys to your new space - whether it's a forever home or a property to let - then you might have some big goals to overhaul the it. It'll be a big project, with all the rooms to freshen up and make the most of. You start to panic that you've bitten off more than you can chew!
Fear not! We are on hand to take on as much or little of the project as you need. From organising a piece of built in furniture in one room to coordinating the whole house from scratch. Decor, fabrics, curtains, blinds, furniture styling - even managing furniture deliveries!
Many of us live busy lives. Places to be, people to see, jobs to check off. When it comes to moving the needle on making our houses in homes, sometimes there's so little time spare that something has to give. Maybe it gets put on the back-burner? And then before you know it, it's a year later and the testers are still on the wall and your inherited half broken blinds are still in the windows.
Whether you need a hand with smaller design decisions or want to hand over the project from design to coordination, we're here to help. We have a range of interior design services which support you through the project as little or much as needed.
The whole process of working on an interior project, especially when it's not something your used to, can feel incredibly overwhelming. Inspiration can be found everywhere, from magazines to TV shows (catch the behind the scenes of our TV show feature here). It's great that we have so much access to this but it can mean we stop in our tracks, unsure of which direction to move in. I often speak to clients who are relieved to have an extra pair of hands - and eyes - on their project to calm the overwhelm. We take it back to basics, helping to refine your vision into a streamlined and cohesive look.
From a one room wonder to a whole home transformation, if you'd like a guiding hand with your project, I'd love to team up! Please call Vicki Kress Interiors on 01759 306777 to arrange your Home Visit.
Here in Yorkshire, the Grandad's Shed team and I are taking on a few larger projects. That means that instead of just focusing on one aspect in a room, like a piece of built in furniture or designing a single room, we're tackling each room from scratch. Decor, fabrics, curtains, blinds, furniture styling - I'm having so much fun!
After over two decades in the industry, it's safe to say I've picked up a good few tips for keeping on top of larger projects. We really put this to the test last year with our Cottage Renovation which you can find out more about in the Cottage Diaries here and here. Those blogs were some of your absolute favourites!
With our latest series of project diaries on the horizon, I wanted to go back to basics. So in this blog, I'm sharing my top 3 tips for tackling bigger interior projects.
All of our projects start the same way, no matter the size. This all-important phase is all about planning and getting laser focused on what you need and want out of your design.
Don't underestimate the importance of this step! You might be itching to get stuck in or skip this out entirely as it's a little time-consuming. Hold those horses! By taking time to prepare and create a clear vision in advance, you're helping yourself in the long run. Why? It minimises rushed decisions down the line as the project picks up lightning speed. It also means you can be as clear as possible with trades who can carry out your vision - without having to fill in blanks.
For us during our Vicki Kress Interiors Packages, this means scoping out a room or building. We dig deep into the aesthetic preferences and consider the functional requirements. From here we produce a mood board and, where required, a presentation. This means early on we know exactly how the room will look, from pieces of furniture to blind fabrics, wall colours to cushions.
Now the design is done it's about implementation - and not juggling the two together.
With bigger projects one thing is certain, you're going to have a lot of moving parts. From trades popping in, to deliveries - right through to the jobs you're taking on yourself. It's making our head spin just thinking about it.
Here's what we do. We create a project schedule to keep tabs on our own and other people's schedules. This way we know who's in the building when - and when we need to make sure someone is in to sort out deliveries. So, crack open your spreadsheet or get out the pens and paper. You're about to get super organised!
We love using a digital calendar or spreadsheet because, as the timeline shifts, you can easily edit and adapt with a couple of clicks.
Being a project manager and creative director can be full-on. Trust me, after over 20 years of doing just this, I certainly know!
Make sure you're taking time for non-project activity. A walk with a friend or a dinner with a family member can do wonders for your stress levels, helping to keep your creativity and positivity in check.
Friends and family can help in other ways than relaxation too. Whether it's cooking a meal or getting their hands dirty with the project itself, don't be afraid to ask for help.
Here at Grandad's Shed, we love supporting people like you who have projects and need a hand with their design. The service I offer is accessible and affordable to all and takes away the myths surrounding interior design. I have recently launched a bespoke interior design service, not only to meet growing demand for my design skills and experience but also to make good design accessible and affordable to all.
I'd love to team up! Please call Vicki Kress Interiors on 01759 306777 to arrange your Home Visit.
I'll be sharing more of our latest project on the blog in the near future. Don't forget to sign up to my newsletter here to make sure you never miss an article.
